History & Origins of Juneteenth National Independence Day
Juneteenth National Independence Day, observed on June 19th, is a US federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Historically, it marks the date in 1865 when Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3, announcing that all enslaved people were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
