Classroom Name Picker for Teachers

This classroom name picker is designed specifically for teachers who want to call on students randomly without repeating names until everyone has had a turn. Unlike a generic wheel spinner, this tool tracks who's been called, shows your round progress, and saves your class rosters so you don't have to re-enter names every lesson.

Why Teachers Love This Tool

  • Guaranteed No-Repeat Picks — every student is selected before anyone is picked twice, ensuring fair participation for the whole class.
  • Saves Class Rosters — enter names once and save them by class. Reload in one click on the next school day.
  • Reduces Favouritism Perception — students trust a random picker because the process is transparent and visually clear.
  • Works on Any Device — runs on a laptop, tablet, or interactive whiteboard with no app download or login needed.
  • Round Reset — once all students are called, reset the round with one click and start a fresh cycle of picks.
  • Pairs with Classroom Timer — use alongside the Classroom Timer Widget to set a speaking time limit per student.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the no-repeat student picker work?

Each pick selects randomly from students who have not yet been called in the current round. Once selected, a student's chip turns grey and is excluded from future picks. Only after clicking Reset Round can the same students be selected again.

Can I save my class roster for future lessons?

Yes. Enter a class name (e.g. "Class 10A") and click Save. The roster is stored in your browser's local storage — it persists across browser sessions so you can reload it tomorrow without re-typing. You can save multiple class rosters and switch between them using the dropdown.

What happens when all students have been called?

The Pick button deactivates and the progress bar shows 100%. A message indicates the round is complete. Click Reset Round to restore all students to the available pool and start a fresh participation cycle.

Can students predict who will be called next?

No. Selection is random from the remaining pool — even you as the teacher cannot know in advance. This unpredictability keeps all students alert and attentive, since anyone still in the remaining pool may be selected at any moment.

Is this suitable for online and hybrid classes?

Yes. Share your screen during a video call and students can see the pick happen live. The large winner display is legible on screen shares and smart boards. No sign-in, no app, no setup — just open the page and go.

Can I manually override and pick a specific student?

Yes. Click any student's chip in the grid to toggle their called / not-called status manually. This lets you mark someone as called even if they weren't picked by the tool, or restore a student to the available pool mid-round.
