Saint Patrick's Day
Guide to the date, history, cultural origins and celebration traditions of Saint Patrick's Day in United Kingdom.
History & Origins of Saint Patrick's Day
Saint Patrick's Day, celebrated on March 17th, honors the patron saint of Ireland who brought Christianity to the island in the 5th century CE. Historically, Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish. In Canada (particularly Newfoundland and Labrador), it is celebrated as a statutory holiday to honor the rich Irish heritage of the early cod-fishing settlers.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
It is celebrated with massive parades, wearing bright green clothing, pinning shamrocks to lapels, playing traditional Irish fiddle music, and drinking Irish stout and green beer in local pubs.
