History & Origins of Islamic New Year

The Islamic New Year, also known as the Hijri New Year, marks the first day of the month of Muharram. It commemorates the historic Hijrah (migration) of the Prophet Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE to escape persecution, establishing the first sovereign Islamic community. This year was later designated as the starting epoch of the Islamic calendar by Caliph Umar.

How It Is Observed & Celebrated

It is celebrated as a quiet day of reflection on historical transitions. Muslims attend mosque lectures on the significance of the Hijrah, offer prayers for peace, and enjoy a quiet day off with family.
