History & Origins of Chulalongkorn Day
Chulalongkorn Day (Wan Piya Maharat) in Thailand, observed on October 23rd, commemorates the passing of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) in 1910. King Chulalongkorn is revered as one of Siam's greatest monarchs. He modernized the country's government, legal system, and military, successfully preserved Thai independence during high European colonialism, and abolished slavery without bloodshed.

Thai citizens, military units, and government officials visit his equestrian statues across the country to lay elaborate flower wreaths, light incense, and pay respect to his progressive reforms.
