The National Day of Sweden (Sveriges nationaldag), celebrated on June 6th, commemorates two major historical milestones: the election of Gustav Vasa as King of Sweden in 1523, which established Sweden as an independent country separate from the Kalmar Union, and the adoption of the historic 1809 Constitution which laid the groundwork for modern Swedish democracy.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Swedes celebrate by waving the blue and yellow national flag, attending royal ceremonies at Skansen open-air museum in Stockholm where the King and Queen hand out flags, and participating in local citizen ceremonies welcoming new Swedish citizens.
