History & Origins of Santiago Apóstol
The Feast of Saint James the Apostle, celebrated on July 25th, honors James, the patron saint of Spain. Historically, James is said to have preached in the Iberian peninsula, and his relics were discovered in the 9th century in Galicia, creating the legendary pilgrimage route 'Camino de Santiago' (Way of St. James) which played a massive role in medieval European cultural exchange.

It is celebrated with grand religious festivals in Galicia, traditional firework spectacles in front of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, historical re-enactments, and sharing of the traditional 'Tarta de Santiago' (almond cake decorated with the Cross of St. James).
