History & Origins of National Day of Catalonia
National Day of Catalonia (Diada Nacional de Catalunya), observed on September 11th, commemorates the Fall of Barcelona on September 11, 1714, during the War of the Spanish Succession. In this siege, Catalan defenders were defeated by the Bourbon troops of King Philip V, leading to the dissolution of Catalan self-governing institutions and the fueros.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Marked by massive public rallies, laying wreaths at the monument of Rafael Casanova, constructing massive human towers (Castells), flying the Senyera and Estelada flags, and public concerts.
