History & Origins of Maundy Thursday
Maundy Thursday (or Holy Thursday) commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his Apostles, where he established the sacrament of the Eucharist and washed his disciples' feet as an act of humility. Historically, the word 'Maundy' comes from the Latin 'mandatum' (commandment), referring to Christ's instruction to 'love one another as I have loved you'. It marks the beginning of the Easter Triduum.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Marked by solemn evening foot-washing liturgies in churches. In many Spanish and Latin American cities, quiet, sorrowful night processions take place featuring magnificent floats carrying carved wooden statues of Christ.
