History & Origins of Buddha's Birthday
Buddha's Birthday (Bucheonim Osin Nal, meaning 'the day Buddha came') is celebrated in South Korea on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month. It commemorates the birth of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. Buddhism has a rich history in Korea, having been introduced in the 4th century and serving as a major spiritual foundation for Korean art, philosophy, and society.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
The celebration is highly visual and centered around lanterns. Temples are adorned with hundreds of colorful lotus lanterns, and major cities host the famous Yeon Deung Hoe (Lotus Lantern Festival), featuring beautiful parades with lantern floats. Visitors are often served free temple food, such as bibimbap, and participate in traditional wishing ceremonies.
