History & Origins of Corpus Christi
The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, commonly known as Corpus Christi, is a Christian feast celebrating the real presence of the body and blood of Jesus Christ in the elements of the Eucharist. Historically established in the 13th century by Pope Urban IV following the Eucharistic miracle of Bolsena, it emphasizes the theological significance of the sacrament and communion.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
It is marked by spectacular street processions where the Holy Sacrament is carried in a monstrance under a canopy. Streets are beautifully carpeted with colorful flower petals and elaborate sand designs, particularly in Spain, Italy, and Latin America.
