History & Origins of Rizal Day
Rizal Day in the Philippines is celebrated on December 30th to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines. December 30, 1896 marks the anniversary of Rizal's execution by the Spanish colonial government in Bagumbayan (now Rizal Park, Manila) for his reformist writings that inspired the Philippine Revolution.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Official ceremonies are led by the President at the Rizal Monument in Manila, featuring the raising of the national flag to half-mast and the laying of commemorative wreaths. Many provinces also hold local civic parades and educational symposiums to commemorate Rizal's contributions to Filipino identity.
