History & Origins of Day of Valor
Day of Valor, known in the Philippines as Araw ng Kagitingan, is celebrated on April 9th. It commemorates the historic fall of the Bataan Peninsula to Japanese forces on April 9, 1942, during World War II. Following the surrender, over 76,000 Filipino and American soldiers were forced to undergo the brutal Bataan Death March. The day stands as a tribute to the raw courage and sacrifice of these defenders.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Devotees, war veterans, and military units gather at the Mount Samat National Shrine (Dambana ng Kagitingan) in Bataan for flag-hoisting and wreath-laying ceremonies presided over by national leaders.
