History & Origins of Holy Thursday

Holy Thursday is the official statutory term for the Thursday of Holy Week in Peru, Chile, and Colombia. Historically inherited from Spanish administrative law, it is observed as a full public holiday to allow citizens to participate in the ancient 'Seven Churches Visitation' (Recorrido de las Siete Iglesias) which dates back to Rome in the 16th century.

How It Is Observed & Celebrated

Devotees dress in formal attire and walk through historic city centers, visiting seven different beautifully decorated altar installations in seven different historic churches, offering prayers at each stop.
