History & Origins of Auckland Anniversary Day
Auckland Anniversary Day is celebrated on the Monday closest to January 29th. It commemorates the founding of the Auckland province and the arrival of Lieutenant-Governor William Hobson in the Bay of Islands on January 29, 1840, who began negotiations for the Treaty of Waitangi and established Auckland as the initial colonial capital.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
The main event is the legendary Auckland Anniversary Regatta, one of the largest single-day sailing regattas in the Southern Hemisphere, which fills the Waitematā Harbour with hundreds of classic yachts, modern keelboats, and traditional Maori waka.
