History & Origins of Wesak Day
Wesak Day is the official public holiday in Malaysia celebrating the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Gautama Buddha. Historically, Buddhism has been practiced in Malaysia for over two millennia, and Wesak was formally gazetted as a national holiday in 1962, reflecting the country's diverse multicultural fabric.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Buddhists gather at major temples like the Buddhist Maha Vihara in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, to participate in the 'bathing of the Buddha' ritual (pouring water over a baby Buddha statue to cleanse bad karma), hoist the colorful Buddhist flag, and join grand float parades in the evening.
