National Day in Malaysia, celebrated on August 31st (popularly called Hari Merdeka), commemorates the historic declaration of independence by the Federation of Malaya from British colonial rule on August 31, 1957. At the Merdeka Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman famously raised his hand and chanted 'Merdeka!' seven times before crowds.
