History & Origins of Jamhuri Day
Jamhuri Day in Kenya, celebrated on December 12th, is the nation's most important national holiday. 'Jamhuri' is the Swahili word for Republic. The day has a double historical significance: it commemorates the date Kenya officially gained independence from British colonial rule on December 12, 1963, and exactly one year later in 1964, when Kenya officially became a sovereign republic.
