History & Origins of Greenery Day
Greenery Day (Midori no Hi) in Japan is celebrated on May 4th. Historically, it was created to honor the late Emperor Shōwa's profound love for nature and botany without directly naming the political holiday after him. In 2007, it was formally moved to May 4th as part of Golden Week to encourage public appreciation of nature and environmental preservation.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Citizens participate in community tree-planting events, visit botanical gardens and national parks for free, and take family hikes in the spring forests.
