History & Origins of Foundation Day

National Foundation Day (Kenkoku Kinen no Hi) in Japan, celebrated on February 11th, commemorates the legendary founding of the nation and the ascension of its mythical first emperor, Emperor Jimmu, in 660 BCE. Historically established in 1872 during the Meiji Restoration as 'Kigensetsu' to foster national identity, it was re-established in 1966 as a day to reflect on national growth and love for the country.

How It Is Observed & Celebrated

Celebrated with patriotic parades featuring Shinto shrines (mikoshi) carried through Tokyo's streets, raising the national flag, and visiting the Meiji Shrine to pray for national prosperity.
