History & Origins of Republic Day
Republic Day in India, celebrated on January 26th, commemorates the historic day in 1950 when the Constitution of India came into effect, completing the country's transition to a sovereign, democratic republic. The date was chosen because on January 26, 1930, the Indian National Congress had declared Purna Swaraj (complete independence) from British colonial rule.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
The main celebration is the magnificent Republic Day Parade on New Delhi's Kartavya Path, featuring a breathtaking display of India's military capabilities, diverse cultural floats from all states, daring motorcycle stunts, and a spectacular air force flypast, presided over by the President of India and a foreign state guest.
