History & Origins of Muharram

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar, and its first day marks the New Year. Historically, Muharram is one of the four sacred months of the year in which fighting is strictly forbidden. It is a period of deep spiritual remembrance, culminating in the historic Day of Ashura on the 10th of the month.

How It Is Observed & Celebrated

Observed with solemn lectures at local Islamic centers, reading of Quranic scriptures, reflecting on personal spiritual goals for the new year, and preparing traditional dishes to share with neighbors.
