History & Origins of Krishna Janmashtami
Krishna Janmashtami marks the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu, believed to have occurred in the Bhadrapada month. Born in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva while imprisoned by King Kansa, Krishna's birth is celebrated as the dawn of righteousness over tyranny.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Devotees observe fasting, sing devotional songs, reenact the divine childhood plays (Raslila) of Krishna, and hold midnight prayer vigils. The spectacular 'Dahi Handi' ritual, where human pyramids break hanging pots of curd, is celebrated with immense joy in Maharashtra and other regions.
