History & Origins of Gandhi Jayanti
Gandhi Jayanti (known in India as Gandhi Jayanti or the Birth of the Father of the Nation) is observed on October 2nd. It marks the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, born October 2, 1869. Gandhi pioneered 'Satyagraha'—the resistance to tyranny through mass non-violent civil disobedience—which successfully led India to independence and inspired civil rights movements worldwide. The UN also observes this day as the International Day of Non-Violence.
