Annunciation
Guide to the date, history, cultural origins and celebration traditions of Annunciation in Greece.
History & Origins of Annunciation
The Annunciation, observed on March 25th, commemorates the visit of the archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary to announce that she would conceive and bear the Son of God. Historically, it is celebrated exactly nine months before Christmas. In Greece, March 25th has a double historical significance, as it was chosen in 1821 to mark the official declaration of the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
In Greece, it is celebrated with massive military and civic parades, flag flying, and a traditional national dish of crispy fried cod served with a pungent garlic dip (Bakaliaros Skordalia), which is eaten even though March 25th falls during the strict Orthodox Lent.
