History & Origins of Liberation Day

Liberation Day (Tag der Befreiung) in Germany, observed on May 8th, commemorates the unconditional surrender of the German Wehrmacht in 1945, effectively ending World War II in Europe and liberating the country and the world from the tyranny of National Socialism. It was declared a special public holiday in Berlin in 2020 and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to mark the victory of democratic values over totalitarianism.

How It Is Observed & Celebrated

Marked by solemn laying of wreaths at historical war memorials, state ceremonies, educational exhibits on anti-fascist resistance, and public lectures dedicated to preserving democratic freedoms and historical memory.
