History & Origins of International Women's Day
International Women's Day, celebrated on March 8th, commemorates the historical struggle for women's rights, voting equality, and labor protection. Rooted in early 20th-century socialist and labor movements in Europe and North America, the holiday was formally recognized by the United Nations in 1977. In Germany, it was declared an official public holiday in the city-state of Berlin in 2019 and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in 2023.
