Armed Forces Day in Egypt, celebrated on October 6th, commemorates the launch of the 1973 October War (also known as the Yom Kippur War), when Egyptian forces successfully crossed the Suez Canal and breached the Bar Lev Line. The event is celebrated as a monumental military success that paved the way for subsequent negotiations and the eventual return of the Sinai Peninsula to Egyptian sovereignty.
