History & Origins of Louis Riel Day
Louis Riel Day is observed in Manitoba on the third Monday of February. Historically, it honors Louis Riel, a Métis leader who led the Red River Rebellion of 1869-1870, drafted the Métis Bill of Rights, and is recognized as the founder of Manitoba, having negotiated the terms under which Manitoba entered the Canadian Confederation.
