History & Origins of Canada Day
Canada Day (Fête du Canada) is celebrated on July 1st. It commemorates the historic date on July 1, 1867, when the British North America Act came into effect, officially uniting three separate colonies—the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick—into a single, self-governing federation within the British Empire under the name of the Dominion of Canada.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Celebrated with massive outdoor concerts, street festivals, painting faces red and white, and spectacular evening firework displays in major cities, with the most famous centered on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
