British Columbia Day, celebrated on the first Monday of August, was formally legislated in 1974. Historically, it honors the heritage, culture, and pioneers of British Columbia, celebrating the establishment of the Colony of British Columbia on August 2, 1858 by the British Parliament to secure the territory from American expansion during the gold rushes.
