History & Origins of Black Awareness Day
Black Awareness Day (Dia da Consciência Negra) in Brazil, celebrated on November 20th, honors the historical legacy and contributions of Afro-Brazilians. It commemorates the date of the death in 1695 of Zumbi dos Palmares, the legendary warrior leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares, who fought against slavery and Portuguese colonial rule.
