History & Origins of Reconciliation Day
Reconciliation Day is observed in the Australian Capital Territory on the Monday on or after May 27th. Formally established in 2018, it marks the start of National Reconciliation Week, celebrating the anniversary of the landmark 1967 referendum where Australians voted overwhelmingly to include Aboriginal people in the national census.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Marked by community walks, indigenous smoking ceremonies, panel discussions on indigenous rights and constitutional recognition, and cultural performances by Indigenous artists.
