History & Origins of May Revolution
The May Revolution (Revolución de Mayo) in Argentina, celebrated on May 25th, commemorates the 'May Week' of 1810 which led to the deposition of Spanish Viceroy Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros and the establishment of the Primera Junta, the first local government in Buenos Aires. This pivotal week started the Argentine War of Independence.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
It is celebrated with the traditional eating of 'locro' (a hearty corn and meat stew) and sweet pastelitos. Citizens attend high mass (Te Deum) at local cathedrals, and schools host patriotic plays where children dress as 1810 townspeople.
