This holiday, observed in Argentina on June 17th, honors General Martín Miguel de Güemes, who passed away on June 17, 1821. Güemes was a key military leader in the Argentine War of Independence who organized the 'Gauchos de Güemes' (or Infernales). Using highly effective guerrilla tactics, he successfully defended the entire northern frontier of Argentina against multiple royalist invasions, protecting the revolution.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Salta province hosts a spectacular night vigil ('Guardia bajo las Estrellas') where gauchos in traditional red-and-black ponchos camp around his monument. This is followed by a massive parade of thousands of gauchos riding on horseback.
