History & Origins of Veterans Day
Veterans Day in the United States, celebrated on November 11th, is a federal holiday honoring all military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Historically originating as Armistice Day in 1919 to mark the end of World War I, it was officially renamed Veterans Day in 1954 under President Dwight D. Eisenhower to expand its scope and honor veterans of all American wars.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Observed with solemn parades in major cities, laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, school ceremonies educating children on military service, and flying the Stars and Stripes flag.
