History & Origins of Presidents Day
Presidents' Day (originally Washington's Birthday) in the United States, celebrated on the third Monday of February, was established as a federal holiday in 1879. While historically designated to honor George Washington, the first president of the United States, the holiday was shifted in 1971 by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act and is now widely celebrated as a day to honor all US presidents, particularly Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
