History & Origins of Eid al-Adha Holiday

Eid al-Adha, also called the 'Festival of the Sacrifice', honors the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God's command. Before he could sacrifice his son, God provided a lamb to sacrifice instead. It also marks the culmination of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.

How It Is Observed & Celebrated

Muslims celebrate by sacrificing a halal animal (usually a sheep or goat) and dividing the meat into three parts: one part for the family, one part for relatives and friends, and one part for the poor. Families gather for prayers and sharing meals.
