Visakha Bucha Day
Guide to the date, history, cultural origins and celebration traditions of Visakha Bucha Day in Thailand.
History & Origins of Visakha Bucha Day
Visakha Bucha Day is the most sacred Buddhist holiday in Thailand, observed on the full moon of the sixth lunar month. It commemorates three landmark events in the life of the Buddha that occurred on the same day: his birth, his enlightenment, and his passing into Nirvana.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
The day is observed with deep religious devotion. Buddhists visit local temples early in the morning to make merit, listen to sermons, and practice meditation. In the evening, devotees participate in the peaceful 'Wian Tian' candlelight procession, walking clockwise three times around the temple's main chapel, holding flowers, incense sticks, and lighted candles.
