Guide to the date, history, cultural origins and celebration traditions of Mother's Day in Thailand.
History & Origins of Mother's Day
Mother's Day in Thailand, celebrated on August 12th, commemorates the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother. Established as a national public holiday in 1976, it honors the Queen's extensive humanitarian work and dedicates the day to celebrating maternal love and the vital role of mothers in Thai society.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Thais celebrate by presenting their mothers with pure white jasmine flowers (dok mali), which represent the pure, unconditional love of a mother, performing respectful kneeling bows, and participating in candlelight ceremonies at night.
