Asanha Bucha Day
Guide to the date, history, cultural origins and celebration traditions of Asanha Bucha Day in Thailand.
History & Origins of Asanha Bucha Day
Asanha Bucha Day is a major Buddhist festival in Thailand, celebrated on the full moon of the eighth lunar month. It commemorates the historic day when the Buddha delivered his very first sermon, the 'Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta' (Setting the Wheel of Dhamma in Motion), to his first five disciples at the Deer Park in Sarnath, India. This event completed the Triple Gem: the Buddha (teacher), the Dhamma (teachings), and the Sangha (monastic community).
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Buddhists make merit at local temples, donate yellow robes and large candles to monks, and participate in candlelit processions at night, marking the start of the three-month Vassa (Buddhist Lent) period.
