History & Origins of Geneva Prayday

Geneva Prayday (Jeûne genevois) is a unique regional holiday in the canton of Geneva, Switzerland, observed on the Thursday following the first Sunday of September. Historically dating back to 1567 during the Protestant Reformation, it arose as a day of prayer and fasting in solidarity with persecuted Protestants in France (the Huguenots) and to thank God for protecting Geneva from military siege.

How It Is Observed & Celebrated

Genevans observe the day by taking a holiday from work, eating traditional plum tarts, and gathering for family dinners, while many also attend ecumenical church services.
