New Year's Day is celebrated on January 1st, marking the first day of the year on the modern Gregorian calendar. The celebration of the new year is one of the oldest human customs, dating back to ancient Mesopotamia around 2000 BCE, where it was celebrated during the vernal equinox. In 46 BCE, Julius Caesar established January 1st as the beginning of the Roman year, dedicating the day to Janus, the god of gates, doors, and beginnings, who is depicted with two faces—one looking back to the past and the other looking forward to the future.
