History & Origins of Feast of Our Lady of Bien Aparecida
The Feast of Our Lady of Bien Aparecida (La Bien Aparecida) is celebrated on September 15th as the patron saint of the autonomous community of Cantabria, Spain. Historically, it commemorates the miraculous 1609 discovery of a tiny, 22-centimeter dark-colored image of the Virgin Mary by native shepherds in the mountain sanctuary of Hoz de Marrón.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Devotees participate in a solemn mountain pilgrimage up to the Sanctuary of Marrón, attend high masses, and host lively outdoor fairs featuring traditional Cantabrian folk dances, bagpipe music, and local mountain food.
