Day of Madrid (Día de la Comunidad de Madrid), celebrated on May 2nd, commemorates the historic Dos de Mayo Uprising on May 2, 1808. In this rebellion, the citizens of Madrid rose up in armed resistance against the occupying Napoleonic French troops, triggering the Spanish War of Independence.
