History & Origins of Day of Asturias
Day of Asturias (Día de Asturias), celebrated on September 8th, commemorates the patron saint of the region, Our Lady of Covadonga. Historically, the Sanctuary of Covadonga was the site of the historic Battle of Covadonga in 722 CE, where Christian forces under Pelagius defeated the Umayyad army, initiating the Reconquista.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Marked by solemn mass at the holy cave of Covadonga, traditional bagpipe parades in regional towns, pouring traditional Asturian cider from high heights in local sidrerías, and eating rich fabada asturiana.
