History & Origins of Castile and León Day
Castile and León Day (Día de Castilla y León), celebrated on April 23rd, commemorates the historic Battle of Villalar fought on April 23, 1521. In this battle, the royalist forces of King Charles I decisively defeated the 'Comuneros' rebel army led by Juan de Padilla, who fought to protect municipal liberties against imperial centralism.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Thousands of citizens make a pilgrimage to the small historic town of Villalar de los Comuneros in Valladolid, participating in political rallies, listening to traditional Castilian folk music played on dulzainas, and eating roasted meats in open-air tents.
