History & Origins of Assumption
The Assumption of the Virgin Mary, observed on August 15th, is a cornerstone theological feast in the Catholic and Orthodox churches. It commemorates the belief that the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken up bodily into heaven at the end of her earthly life. Historically, this feast was celebrated as early as the 5th century CE under the name of the 'Dormition' or falling asleep of Mary.
