History & Origins of Independence Movement Day
Independence Movement Day (Samiljeol) in South Korea, celebrated on March 1st, commemorates the historic March 1st Movement of 1919. On this day, Korean nationalists and students publicly read the Declaration of Independence in Seoul and launched peaceful nationwide protests against Japanese colonial rule, which served as a massive catalyst for modern Korean nationalism.

Marked by massive public flag-waving ceremonies, historic re-enactments of the reading of the Declaration in Tapgol Park, and the decoration of all streets with the national Taegeukgi flag.
