Hangul Day
Guide to the date, history, cultural origins and celebration traditions of Hangul Day in South Korea.
History & Origins of Hangul Day
Hangul Day (Korean Alphabet Day) in South Korea is celebrated on October 9th. It commemorates the historic proclamation of the native Korean alphabet, Hangul, by King Sejong the Great in October 1446. Prior to Hangul, Koreans used complex Chinese characters, which restricted literacy to the elite. King Sejong created the highly scientific, easy-to-learn alphabet explicitly to enable the common people to read and write easily.
How It Is Observed & Celebrated
Marked by major calligraphy competitions, academic conferences on linguistics at the King Sejong Statue in Gwanghwamun Plaza, museum open houses, and public performances celebrating Korean literature.
